The Communication Department houses several organizations to extend students’ education by helping them to acquire leadership skills, learn directly from professionals in their field, and work with outside clients to fulfill their clients’ communication needs.
Fifth Street Consulting is a student-led, faculty-advised consulting firm specializing in communication and media consulting. Our goal is to provide our student consultants with the real-world experience of collaborating with a range of organizations to provide high-quality work for clients. Students establish their involvement and expertise in Fifth Street Consulting by assuming a position on the Student Leadership Team (SLT) or as a Partner through a competitive application process. American Advertising Federation (AAF) provides numerous programs to guide students through advertising curriculum and job placement. AAF's programs include internship opportunities, scholarships, career fairs, student conferences and national competitions. Alpha Delta Sigma is the national honor society sponsored by AAF that recognizes scholastic achievement in advertising studies. Marietta students have attended regional and national AAF events, as well as received AAF scholarships.
National Broadcasting Society (NBS) is a student and professional society of more than 85 chapters on college and university campuses. Alpha Epsilon Rho is the national honor society for electronic media students. NBS - AERho has had as its purpose the goal of encouraging and rewarding scholarship and accomplishment among students of broadcasting and establishing meaningful communication between student and professional broadcasters. Marietta students have attended regional and national NBS conferences, and received production awards and scholarships.
Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ) is a professional group and the oldest national honorary society for collegiate mass communications. Students who are active in journalism or broadcasting at the college are eligible, and exemplary academic achievement is recognized by the honorary. Among other activities, SCJ sponsors a national journalism contest, and Marietta students have received awards for their work in this national competition.
Pi Kappa Delta is the nation’s oldest speech and debate honor society, dating back to 1911. The society based on the commitment to and promotion of ethical, humane and inclusive communication and educational practices. Marietta College students who meet the requirements by focusing on oratory are invited to join.
Lambda Pi Eta is the official Communication Studies honor society of the National Communication Association (NCA). Lambda Pi Eta has over 400 active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide. Marietta College students are invited into this honor society if they have a 3.0 cumulative GPA with 60 semester or 90 quarter credit hours completed and a 3.25 GPA for communication studies courses with 12 semester or 18 quarter credit hours completed.
Alpha Delta Sigma is a national honor society sponsored by the American Advertising Federation, recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement in advertising studies. Students that are dues-paying members of the AAF college chapter, have achieved senior status on or before the nomination due date and have completed at least two senior- or junior-level advertising courses, and have a minimum GPA of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) in all advertising studies and all other courses are eligible for membership.
Alpha Epsilon Rho is the national honor society for electronic media students. Members of AERho emphasize superior scholarship and creative participation in broadcast, corporate, and digital media production and activity. Membership in AERho exemplifies excellence of work, demonstrated leadership qualities, and service to the organization, the community, and the industry.
