Great things are happening at Marietta College, thanks to our engaged students, talented faculty and staff, and our commitment as a campus to blaze new trails. Each week, the College will share this Spotlight on Success. If you have good news items to add, please email marketing@marietta.edu.

STUDENT SUCCESS

  • Nearly three dozen Marietta College students spent fall break learning about the American Civil Rights Movement during a trip to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama. Funded by an anonymous donor, the educational experience allowed students to explore black slavery and the Civil Rights Movement by visiting historic sites and museums dedicated to preserving that part of American history. Students visited the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached, and the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum.
  • Marietta’s Physician Assistant Program celebrated PA Week last week. Faculty surprised students with a special breakfast on Tuesday, and our graduate students celebrated by painting the rock and dressing as their favorite professors during the week.
  • Education major Breanna Herrick ’26 (New Martinsville, West Virginia) was selected as one of the 2024 WV Wonder Women by WV Living magazine. She is the owner of Bre’s Cupcakin’ Around, a baking business that has raised more than $45,000 for local charities. Since 2014, the magazine has honored special women from the state who are “raising the bar in their communities, serving as beacons of light in their industries, and forcing change for the greater good.”
  • Senior Petroleum Engineering majors have worked hard to organize the 2024 Marietta College Energy Technical Exhibition, which will take place on Friday, October 18, starting at 9:00 a.m. in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. Students from every major are invited to attend this event, which features representatives from the energy industry. There will be interview rooms set up for students to interview with companies looking for interns or employees. Industry equipment will also be on display on Butler Street, so students will be able to learn about various aspects of field work.
  • Marietta’s Physics Department is hosting the Eastern Great Lakes Section APS & Appalachian AAPT Combined 2024 Fall Meeting on Friday and Saturday (October 18 & 19). Drs. Dennis Kuhl and Joseph Smith are co-chairing the meeting, which includs three professional societies: the Eastern Great Lakes Section of the American Physical Society (Michigan, Ohio, and parts of Inidana and Pennsylvania), the Appalachian Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (Southeast Ohio, West Virginia and Western Maryland), and the Society of Physics Students (Zone 7). Marietta College students will present research posters and give oral presentations.

ATHLETICS

  • Marietta College’s Valorant sports team is now 4-0. The Fortnite team qualified for the playoffs in November during their first game of the season, when the team ranked second in their group. There are currently 40 players on MC’s roster, and they anticipate adding Rocket League and League of Legends teams for the spring semester. Students can join esports any time during the semester to practice and can begin competing spring semester. Watch matches live on the College’s Twitch channel: https://www.twitch.tv/mariettaesports.
  • Volleyball is set to take on Capital University on Wednesday, October 16, and is currently ranked 12th nationally with a 14-0 record.
  • Football is preparing for Saturday’s match against Muskingum this week. Last Saturday, the Pioneers beat Heidelberg in a 35-7 win, giving MC a 5-0 record overall and 4-0 in the OAC.
  • Men’s rowing opened the fall racing season by sweeping the Head of the Ohio on Saturday in Pittsburgh. This Saturday, Marietta will host the Head of the Muskingum.
