Great things are happening at Marietta College, thanks to our engaged students, talented faculty and staff, and our commitment as a campus to blaze new trails. Each week, the College will share this Spotlight on Success. If you have good news items to add, please email marketing@marietta.edu.

STUDENT SUCCESS

  • Adrienne Hammontree ’26 presented two research posters during the Geological Society of America Connects meeting in Los Angeles. Her first paper, A Study on the New Concord Meteorite: Mapping Fragments from the 1860 Fall using Property Data, focuses on the large meteorite, which was collected in 1860 by MC Geology Professor Ebeneezer Andrews and is currently on display in Brown. Her second paper, Martian Meteorite Bulk Chemistry Dataset to Aid in Orbital Gamma Ray and Neutron Date Interpretation of Phobos, pertains to Adrienne’s work with the next big space mission to Mars — the Martian Moons eXploration mission (MMX) — which is headed by the Japanese Aerospace eXploration Agency (JAXA). Among the several hundred undergraduates presenting at the conference, Adrienne’s MMX poster won the Society of Sigma Gamma Epsilon’s (National Honor Society for Geology Undergraduates) Best Poster Award. In addition to her posters, Adrienne was selected as a NASA Here 2 Observe (H2O) student participant in the Europa Clipper mission. Adrienne was invited to watch the launch on Thursday, but Hurricane Milton postponed the mission temporarily.
  • Aditya Shah ’25 presented a poster at the American Physical Society (APS) Division of Plasma Physics Meeting in Atlanta this week, which he attended with Dr. Joseph Smith, Assistant Professor of Physics at Marietta. The poster, Meta-Analysis of High Intensity Laser-Proton Acceleration Experiments, is the product of a research project that Adi, Kaitlyn Ann Stewart ’26, Nick Haught ’26, Dr. Smith, and three researchers from The Ohio State University conducted. Funding was provided by the Marietta College Investigative Studies Program, the Rickey Endowment, the Appalachian Semiconductor Education and Technical (ASCENT) Ecosystem/ Intel, and the APS.
  • The English Department welcomed the 2024 Lucas Visiting Writer, Catherine Venable Moore. The nonfiction author taught a creative writing class, had lunch with students, and also gave a public reading as part of the visiting writer program, which has been endowed by Carol Lucas ’70 since 2019.

GREEK LIFE

  • Marietta enjoyed a successful Greek Week, which included the Chopped on The Mall and Obstacle Course competitions, line dancing, philanthropy, and a Greek formal.

ATHLETICS

  • Marietta’s Football connected with the community on Friday during October’s First Friday event in downtown Marietta. Players and coaches interacted the fans of all ages while also passing out free tickets to Saturday’s game vs. Ohio Northern University, which the Pioneers won 45-10. The team, now 4-0, travels to Heidelberg on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. game, which will be broadcast here

CAMPUS

  • The Office of Admission hosted special Visit Days for prospective STEM and Teacher Education majors recently, giving talented high school students an opportunity to interact with current students, faculty and staff.
  • Thanks to a generous donation from Renee Bailey Gallagher ’84 and her husband, Daniel, Marietta College’s student newspaper, The Marcolian, is digitized and accessible online. Legacy Library Director Angela Burdiss and student worker, Delaney Snodgrass ’26, worked for several months adding content to the Marietta College Archives collection in the Digital Collections at Marietta College Library repository. The issues date back to 1945 and go through 2000.
  • Ohio Senator Brian Chavez visited campus on Friday. He met with President Margaret L. Drugovich and Provost Kathleen Dougherty, toured campus and learned about the ways Marietta College impacts the community through the Teacher Education program, by giving local students access to quality graduate and undergraduate education, and by providing access to artistic, athletic and cultural events.
  • Spencer Thorn, Marietta’s new mental health counselor in the Center for Health and Wellness, started a regular email series called "Pioneer Wellness Tip" which covers a specific mental health topic, a quote, and some tips to accompany the topic.
