The Marietta College Art Department is pleased to present You can’t take it with you… a solo exhibition by artist and Professor of Printmaking at Ohio University, Melissa Haviland. The show will be on display in Gallery 310 from August 26 through December 5, 2024, with an artist reception on Friday, September 20, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
You can’t take it with you… is about being swept away by the sea of life, as if the ocean just flooded through your home and swept you away. It is inspired by the chaos that enters our lives—the swirl of daily stresses like bedtime, dinner, meetings, and deadlines, combined with larger cultural issues such as the refugee and migrant crisis, rising sea levels, and climate change.
Directly outside Gallery 310 in The Atrium Gallery is a series of smaller exhibitions of Professor Haviland’s printmaking students. The Salt & Pepper is on the Table, by Alex Long, will run September 23 through October 25. In The Salt & Pepper is on the Table, “I personify the salt and pepper as iterations of my memories around dining tables, shared meals, and the conversations that took place there.” Lastly, Moth-er, by Nina Battaglia, will run October 28 through November 22. In Moth-er, “I am interested in investigating the human nature relationship and the enduring impact of family traditions.”
Marietta College's McCoy Professor Jolene Powell is excited to start the academic year with the exhibit.
"As an artist educator, I wanted to show the connection between student and professor, and the interconnectivity between the artwork that is learned and cultivated, which is why Gallery 310 and The Atrium Gallery include influenced and the influencer, inspired and inspirer, the student and the teacher," Powell said.
