"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
—Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972
Title IX is commonly thought of as pertaining to varsity sports. However, the law is actually much broader. Title IX prohibits gender-based discrimination in all programs and activities of any educational institution receiving federal funding. Although two of the most common applications of the law are athletics and sexual harassment/misconduct, Title IX also applies to admissions, financial aid, academic matters, career services, counseling and medical services, and all other programs and activities available to students at Marietta College.
As Marietta College's Title IX Coordinator, Richard Danford holds the primary responsibility for coordinating the College's Title IX compliance efforts, including overseeing all complaints of noncompliance and identifying and addressing any patterns or systemic problems that arise during the review of such complaints. Deputy Title IX Coordinators are Amanda Mullen and Jenn Castle. Reports of possible violations of Marietta College's Title IX Policy can be reported to any one of these three Title IX officers.
