CASE honors Marietta College with Gold Award in 2008 competition

Since the inaugural edition of Marietta, The Magazine of Marietta College in the fall of 2006, Marietta College alumni and friends have raved about its content, design and overall professionalism.

Now the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has provided national recognition for the College's effort through the 2008 Circle of Excellence Awards.

Marietta College's Office of Alumni and College Relations was recently awarded a Gold Award by CASE in the Magazine Publishing Improvement category. The College entered three magazines. Golden Reunion Class Dinner

Dozens return for the Class of 1958's Golden Reunion Weekend

Peggy Wise Eddy '61 sat in a corner chair in the formal dining room of Dan and Gillian Harrison's Second Street home in Marietta studying the beautiful furnishings and the ornate woodwork throughout the room.

"We used to dance on that floor and never gave it any thought," said the Sigma Gamma Kappa sister, admiring the intricate wood inlaid flooring. "It's so beautiful."

What used to be the Alpha Tau Omega house was converted years earlier into a single-family home. ATOs and friends who returned for the 2008 Golden Reunion weekend at Marietta were welcomed by the Harrisons to revisit the former fraternity house for an early evening reception. Eddy attended the weekend with her husband, Dick, an ATO who graduated in 1958.

171st graduating class challenged to make a better society

Marietta College's graduating seniors may have felt like they were jettisoned back to the 1960s during the 171st annual commencement ceremony on Saturday (May 17).

But U.S. Congressman John Lewis' (D-Ga.) references to his time as a civil rights leader as he stood side-by-side with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were meant to show how the country has survived and, in some cases, moved on from many of the social injustices of the past. However, the honored guest also used his recollections as a way to communicate to the approximately 275 graduates that there is still much more to be done.

"If you want a better society, you cannot wait for Marietta College to do it. You cannot wait for the government to do it. You cannot wait for your friends or family to do it," said Lewis, who has served in the Congress since 1986. "Through your own efforts, through your own creativity and vision, you have to do it. You must make our society a better place."

It hasn't been all that long...only about a year...since Mattie Unger '07 marched across the stage at Commencement, but returning for last weekend's graduation ceremony and to see friends make the same trip prompted some interesting reflection and perspective.

Enjoy her alumni viewpoint shared with the newest members of The Long Blue Line.
