Pachyderm Installation

Pachyderm is a computer program which will help you learn scientific names.  This page will help you install the program on your computer.

Please note that Pachyderm was written in Visual Basic 5.0 for the Windows 95 operating system.  It should successfully run on Windows 95 and 98.  We have not tested it on Windows 2000, Me, NT, or XP.

We are providing the program for you to install as a courtesy.  We can't guarantee that it will work on your computer, and we don't have the time to troubleshoot installations.  If you can't install it on your computer, the program does run on the lab computers.

Computer Lab Schedule

In order to run, Pachyderm needs several types of files:

Return to Biology 105 Homepage
Return to Biology 106 Homepage
Return to Biology 111 Homepage
Return To Aquatic Biology Homepage
Return to Biology Courses Page

  1. The Pachyderm program (Pachyderm.exe)
  2. The database files (end in .mdb)
  3. The image files (over 1500 files ending mostly in .jpg)
  4. Various digital linked libraries (.dll) and control files (.ocx)

Your computer may already have the latter.  Therefore, we recommend these steps to load the program:

  1. Insert the CD.
  2. Open My Computer and use it to open the CD.
  3. Use the Edit:Select ALL command to select all the directories and files.
  4. Use the Edit:Copy command to copy all of these directories and files.
  5. In My Computer, move to your hard drive and use the File:New:Folder command to create a new folder on your hard drive.
  6. Right-Click on the new folder, select "rename" and rename the new folder Pachyderm.
  7. Open the new folder and use the Edit:Paste command to copy all the selected directories and files from the CD to your hard drive.  This will take several minutes.
  8. Using My Computer, go to the new Pachyderm directory and use the Edit:Select All command.
  9. Right-Click on the selected files and select Properties.
  10. Clear the "Read-Only" check box.
  11. Try to run the program by double-clicking on the Pachyderm.exe file.
  12. If the program runs, you will want to place a shortcut to the file by dragging the pachyderm.exe file's icon either to your Office Taskbar or to the desktop.
  13. That's it!

If the program does not run, your computer does not have the proper .DLL and OCX files installed.  You will have to run the Pachyderm Installation Program.

  1. Delete the entire directory that you installed in the steps above.  Be sure to empty the recycle bin.
  2. Use My Computer to go to the Setup directory on the CD.
  3. Double-Click on the setup.exe file to run the installation file.
  4. When the installation program is complete, use My Computer to copy the images directory to your hard drive, placing it in the same directory as the pachyderm files (usually Program Files\Pachyderm).
  5. The program should now run.

To install and run the Millionaire program:

  1. If the program ran successfully using steps 1-13 above, you can find and run the Million.exe file in the million directory.
  2. If this does not work, run the Millionaire install program in the Pachyderm\Million\Setup directory.

  1. If you ran the Pachyderm Installation program (steps 1-5), copy the million directory to your hard drive using my computer.  Run the Million.exe file from the directory on your hard drive.
  2. If this does not work, run the Millionaire install program in the Pachyderm\Million\Setup directory.

In all cases, you can only run Millionaire from the Million subdirectory of the directory where Pachyderm is located.  If you try to run it from anywhere else, it will not be able to find the databases and picture files and the program will crash.
