Set Up an Out-of-Office/Vacation Autoreply
The following steps will allow you to automatically reply to anyone who sends you an email while you are out of the office.
- Log into McNet
- From Windows: Click "Start" -> "Run" type "telnet mcnet.marietta.edu" and hit enter.
- You will now be prompted to enter your username and password.
- From the command prompt, type "go-on-vacation"
- If it is the first time running the "go-on-vacation" script, you will see the window below.
Type your vacation message. (This can be changed later.)
Then hold the CNTRL key and type X to exit.

- If this is not your first time using the vacation program (or you have just typed CNTRL+X), you will have the following option.

- Type y (yes) or n (no) and type Enter.
- If you choose to view your message, you can edit it.
If not, you will have the option to edit your message.

Once you have made changes to your message and it is saved—or if you choose not to edit it—you will be prompted to set your vacation message.
Press CTRL-X to save. Then type y (yes) and press Enter.

- Typing y (yes) will enable your vacation message.
- Typing n (no) will quit the program without enabling the message.
Set an Autoreply for Aliases
After enabling the vacation message, you will be asked:
Do you have an alias that needs to reply with the vacation message as well?
- Typing y (yes) will prompt you to enter all case-sensitive aliases.
E.g., if your email alias is "john.doe@marietta.edu," it is important to enter both:- john.doe
- John.Doe
When you are finished, type "exit" to exit the system.
Removing the Automatic Reply Message
When you return to the office, log into the server and run the go-on-vacation script again.
As before, you will be prompted to see and edit the message.
Type n (no) for both. The screen will read, "You have a .forward file in your home directory. Would you like to remove it and disable the vacation feature?"
Type y (yes) and Enter. Your message will be removed.
Type "exit"' and Enter to exit the system.
