Talasnik earns Division III CRCA National Scholar-Athletes honors
Pioneer rower one of 78 D-III student-athletes selected

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College sophomore rower Kristen Talasnik (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) was recently selected as NCAA Division III Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete.
Talasnik, a biology major, was the coxswain for the women’s varsity eight throughout the 2007-08 season. She helped Marietta compile a 19-21 overall, head-to-head record this spring, which featured a second place finish at the Mid-Atlantic D-III Regional Championship in late April.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Marietta College women's crew, enduring a last-minute schedule and lineup change, closed out its 2008 season with its Freshmen/Novice 4+ participating in the Dad Vail Rowing Championship on Friday (May 9) morning.
The Pioneers, who were originally slated to race their Varsity 8+ at the East Coast Athletic Conference's National Invitational Rowing Championship, took fifth in their heat at Dad Vails and did not qualify for a semifinal on the Schuylkill River.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Head Coach Kelly Harris and her Varsity 8+ learned on Tuesday (April 28) morning that the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) accepted their bid to participate in the National Invitational Rowing Championship, which will take place May 10-11 on Lake Quinsigamound in Worcester, Mass. Marietta has earned the right to battle 23 other crews from the eastern coast in the national invitational.

LEWISBERRY, Pa. — Marietta College women’s crew continued its stellar season on the water with its performance at the Mid-Atlantic Division III Regional Championship, which was raced Saturday (April 26) afternoon at Gifford Pinchot State Park. The Pioneer women not only continued their streak of making every Grand Final but also placed both boats in the top three. Marietta’s Freshmen/Novice 4+ claimed its second gold medal of the season, while the Varsity 8+ took bronze. Overall, Washington won the team title while Marietta was second and Mary Washington third.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — For the second straight week, the Marietta College women’s crew earned a bronze medal in the Freshmen/Novice 4+ and had its Varsity 8+ reach the Grand Final. The latest success came at the 41st Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship Saturday (April 19) and Sunday (April 20) afternoon on Melton Hill Lake.
The F/N 4+, which featured bow Miki Abitante (Columbia, Md./Atholton), Abigail Bogdan (Vienna, W.Va.), Megan Stuhlfauth (Hainesport, N.J./Merion Mercy Academy), stroke Yolien Peeters (Cranberry Twp, Pa./Seneca Valley) and coxswain Stockard Hyjek (Leetsdale, Pa./Quaker Valley), took second place in its opening heat on Saturday, finishing in 8:33.18, and behind Tulsa, who rowed a 8:15.80 race. The Pioneers then won their semifinal after crossing the line in 8:19.00 to advance to the Grand Final on Sunday.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's rowing program climbed into the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing spotlight for the first time this season, as the fourth regular season Varsity 8+ poll was announced on Wednesday (April 16) afternoon.
The Pioneers received votes for the first time since midway through 2006 when they climb as high as No. 15 in the poll. While Marietta remains outside the top 15, it picked up eight votes, which ranks them 22nd out of the 43 schools who participate in NCAA Division III rowing. The Pioneers were also ranked No. 14 at one point during the 2005 season.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Marietta College women's crew capped off its weekend at the Knecht Cup with an unpredicted success, as its Freshman/Novice 4+ out rowed 33-of-36 shells to take a bronze medal Sunday (April 13) morning on the Cooper River. The Pioneers Varsity 8+ also went head-to-head with some of Division III's top boats and placed fifth in the Grand Final.
The Freshmen/Novice 4+, which featured bow Miki Abitante (Columbia, Md./Atholton), Abigail Bogdan (Vienna, W.Va.), Megan Stuhlfauth (Hainesport, N.J./Merion Mercy Academy), stroke Yolien Peeters (Cranberry Twp, Pa./Seneca Valley) and coxswain Stockard Hyjek (Leetsdale, Pa./Quaker Valley), entered an open event that included many scholarship schools. The Pioneers won their opening heat and then took second in their semifinal to make it to the Grand Final. In the final event, Marietta (8:17.5) took third, finishing behind only first place Tulsa (7:59.1) and runner-up Lafayette (8:13.2).

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Marietta College women’s crew entered two boats into the 2008 Knecht Cup, which takes place each year on the Cooper River. The Lady Pioneers entered a Varsity 8 and a Freshmen/Novice 4 into the competition, which featured over 50 crews from across the country. MARIETTA, Ohio — One day after sweeping the competition at the Marietta Invitational, the Lady Pioneers were back in action Sunday (March 30) afternoon, facing off against Purdue University in two races at the 53rd annual Challenge Cup. The Lady Pioneers capped off their weekend with solid races in the Novice 8+ and Varsity 8+ against the Division I rival.
The women’s Novice 8+, which sat from bow Miki Abitante (Columbia, Md./Atholton), Michelle Tarracciano (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley Union), Lauren Yanko (Akron/Archbishop Hoban), Emily Davis (Louisville, Ky./J. MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s rowing team hosted D’Youville (N.Y.College and the University of Charleston (W.Va.) Saturday (March 29) morning for the 2008 Marietta Invitational. The schedule originally included a men’s competition but late cancellations left the men without anyone to race. Conditions on the Muskingum River featured a strong cross tail breeze with a fast tail current, providing an opportunity for very low times. The Lady Pioneers had a solid day of racing, taking first in all three races to sweep the event.
Each school sent a Varsity 8+ out on the course to open the morning’s racing. Marietta, which featured senior bow Meredith Hay (Berwick, Maine/Marshwood), senior Amee Epling (Parkersburg, W.Va.), senior Meg Foraker (New Lexington/Culver Academy), sophomore Caitlin Piotrowski (Dublin/Dublin Jerome), freshman Katherine Thomas (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel Area), junior Krista Tkacz (Egg Harbor Twp, N.J.), senior Amanda Chuderewicz (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler), junior stroke Anjouli Dapice (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) and sophomore coxswain Lauren Talasnik (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest), led the race wire-to-wire, finishing the 2,000m course in 5:26.4. Charleston crossed the line 25 seconds later (5:51.48) in second place, while D’Youville took third (6:16.18).

TAMPA, Fla. — The Marietta College women’s crew capped off a week of training on Canal 54 in Palm Bay, Fla., with a strong showing at the Mayor’s Cup, which took place Saturday (March 15) at the 1,500m course on the Seddon Channel. The Lady Pioneers had their Varsity 8 finish runner-up while Marietta’s Freshmen 8 placed fourth at the team’s first competition of the spring.
Temple won the Mayor’s Cup trophy after finishing with the most points between its men and women. Jacksonville was second and Yale, who only had its men, finished third. Marietta placed fourth among the ten schools at the competition.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College women’s rowing, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Kelly Harris and assistant Chase Graham, hopes to lay the foundation for its future by reestablishing the principles that have made it successful throughout the program’s history. The team is dedicated to developing a healthy atmosphere for rowing, which promotes positive attitudes and a consistent work ethic.
Four seniors—Amanda Chuderewicz (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler), Amee Epling (Parkersburg, W.Va.), Meg Foraker (New Lexington/Culver Academy) and Meredith Hay (Berwick, Maine/Marshwood)--will work with two juniors—Anjouli Dapice (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) and Krista Tkacz (Egg Harbor Twp, N.J.)—and a pair of sophomores--Caitlin Piotrowski (Dublin/Dublin Jerome) and Lauren Talasnik (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest)—to help develop the team chemistry necessary for success on the water this spring.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 15th annual Ohio Valley Indoor Rowing Championships were held Saturday (Feb. 9) afternoon on the campus of Marietta College.
Over 115 athletes, representing high school and college divisions, crowded the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center for the event, which was rowed on ergometers and uses a sophisticated computer timing system.

MARIETTA, Ohio — While most Marietta College senior student-athletes dispersed after graduation, Pioneer rowers Chuck Geyer '07and Chase Graham '07 remained on campus. Under the guidance of Head Coach Chris Pucella, the duo extended their training in order to compete in both the 2007 USRowing Club National Championships and the 125th Royal Canadian Henley. The regattas are two of the largest events in North America during the summer.
Geyer and Graham, champions of Marietta's 2006 House of Wines Pair Championship, first entered the Men's Intermediate 2- competition at the USRowing Club National Championships July 18-21 on the Copper River in Camden, N.J. The former Pioneers swept the event, winning its opening heat (7:03.80), semifinal (6:55.20) and final (6:48.72) to capture the gold medal.

Harris brings a successful rowing background

MARIETTA, Ohio — Former University of New Hampshire standout and Marist College head coach Kelly Harris was hired as the new women's rowing coach at Marietta College Tuesday (June 5) morning, according to Athletics Director Debbie Lazorik.
Harris replaces Karen Glowacki, who resigned following the 2007 season after five years with the Pioneers' program.
"It is a privilege to become a part of the Marietta College community, and I am eager to work in such a positive and supportive environment," said Harris. "Marietta is clearly committed to the success of their athletic programs, and I want to thank the department for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a long-standing tradition and history of this sport at the College.”
