MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Athletics Director Larry Hiser recently announced the hiring of Andy Bucheit as the Pioneers new men’s head tennis and men’s assistant basketball coach.
"I want to thank Coach VanderWal, Larry Hiser and Marietta College for providing me with an excellent opportunity,” Bucheit said. “I am excited to get on the hardwood this fall and begin working with our players.”

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) announced its 2008 All-OAC Men’s Basketball award winners Tuesday (March 4) morning and both Marietta College senior Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) and junior Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) earned All-OAC honorable mention. The duo was instrumental in the success of the young Pioneers this season and extend Marietta's streak of having atleast one player earn league recognition to 17 straight seasons.
Rockhold had a breakout season in 2007-08. The center, who entered the year averaging 2.5 points and 2.8 rebounds over his career, was the only player in the OAC to average a double double this winter and led the league in rebounding. He finished with eight double doubles in 25 games. Rockhold finished the year averaging 13.4 points and 10.4 rebounds to go along with 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks. He ranked 21st in the country in rebounding. Rockhold scored a career-high 28 points in his final game for the Pioneers against Baldwin-Wallace and tied a school record with a career-high 23 rebounds against Waynesburg (Pa.) earlier in the season.

Yellow Jackets defeat Pioneers 86-60 in season finale

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) saved his best for his last game as a Pioneer. He scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in Marietta College's 86-60 loss to visiting Baldwin-Wallace College Saturday (Feb. 23) afternoon on Fenton Court. The loss brings Marietta's final record to 6-19 overall and 2-16 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Baldwin-Wallace improved to 11-14 and 8-10 in the OAC. It will now prepare to play in the upcoming eight-team OAC Tournament. The victory was a milestone for Baldwin-Wallace coach Steve Bankson, as he picked up his 700th career win. He is now the only collegiate coach in Ohio history to have 700 career wins.
Rockhold, honored before the game as the only senior on the Pioneers' squad, collected his eighth double double of the season and is the only player in the OAC to average a double double (13.4 points and 10.4 rebounds) in 2007-08.

The loss drops the Pioneers' record to 6-18 overall and 2-15 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Mount Union improves its record to 9-15 overall and 6-11 in the OAC.
Leading the way for the Pioneers was freshman guard Nathan Edick (Westerville/Thomas Worthington) with 17 points, as he hit 5-of-9 (.555) from behind the arc. Senior Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Juniors Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) and Daun Lutes (New Matamoras/Frontier) each scored eight points in the loss. The loss drops Marietta's record to 6-13 overall and 2-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Wilmington improves to 12-7 overall and 7-5 in the OAC.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Despite losing a 10-point on the road in the final minutes, the Marietta College men's basketball team gutted out a 96-95 win in overtime at Otterbein College Wednesday (Jan. 30) night. The win is the first for the Pioneers over the Cardinals in Westerville since Feb. 2, 2000. With the win Marietta improves its record 6-12 overall and 2-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Otterbein falls to 4-14 overall and 3-8 in the OAC.
Freshman Jordan Cox (West Union) led six double-digit scorers for Marietta with 21 points, 15 of those points coming from behind the arc. Juniors Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) and Daun Lutes (New Matamoras/Frontier) both scored 16 points. Lutes also collected a game-high 10 rebounds. Matt Kubachka (Shade/Alexander) came off the bench to score 14 points. Jay Chadwell (Georgetown) contributed 11 points, while Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) added 10 points, including the game-winner from the line with three seconds remaining in overtime.

The loss brings the Pioneer’s record to 5-12 overall and 1-9 in the OAC. The Polar Bears improve to 10-7 overall and 6-4 in the OAC with the road win.
Ohio Northern controlled the pace of the game early, as it built an early 10-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half. The Polar Bears did not let up and answered every Pioneer bucket with one of their own and led by 21, 45-24, at the half. The second half proved to be much of the same, as the Pioneers could not get the deficit below 20 points. Ohio Northern built its lead to as much as 27 and prevailed with the 80-56 win.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Marietta College men’s basketball team closed out the first half of its 2007-08 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) schedule with a 79-56 loss to No. 9 Capital University Wednesday (Jan. 23) evening at the Capital Center.
Turnovers were the story of the game, as first place Capital (14-2, 9-0 OAC) turned 21 turnovers (14 in the first half) into 20 points. Marietta (5-11, 1-8 OAC) forced 12 turnovers but converted them into just five points.

MARIETTA, Ohio — 2008 marked the 11th year that the Marietta College men's basketball team brought the national "Dream to Read" program into local elementary schools.
The Pioneers visited 400 students at Harmar Elementary, Phillips Elementary and Washington Elementary. The players, who split up into groups, were assigned a book to read to each class. They followed it up with a question and answer session where the kids asked questions about college and basketball. The players then signed autographs.

BEREA, Ohio — Junior Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) poured in a game-high 26 points and received plenty of help from his fellow starters as Marietta College's men's basketball team got into the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win column with an 86-82 victory at Baldwin-Wallace College Saturday (Jan. 19) afternoon. The win, which snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets, improved the Pioneers' record to 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the OAC. Baldwin-Wallace fell to 5-10, 1-6 in league play.
Baldwin-Wallace jumped out to an early 14-5 lead just 3:25 into the action. The Yellow Jackets kept the lead throughout the first half, stretching it to as many as 12 before taking a 45-41 lead into intermission.

The loss drops the Pioneers' record to 4-10 overall and 0-6 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks improved to 6-6, 3-3 in league play.
John Carroll's defense limited Marietta to just 13-of-45 (.289) from the field, including 7-of-21 (.33) from long range, and forced 25 turnovers. The Blue Streaks, meanwhile, went 29-of-77 (.377) from the floor, including 9-of-21 (.429) from deep. John Carroll dominated the boards, out rebounding Marietta 53-40. AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Marietta College junior guard Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Triway) earned Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Player of the Week honors, according to the league office, which released its weekly awards on Wednesday (Jan. 2) afternoon.
Creasap led the Pioneers to a 2-0 record at the 37th Annual Marietta Shrine Classic last week. Creasap set a tournament single-game record with eight three-pointers in their 95-85 win over Grove City and also tied a single-game record by hitting 10-of-10 from the free-throw line in their 98-85 win over Waynesburg. In two games, Creasap tallied 50 points and seven assists. For his efforts, he was named Tournament MVP.

The win improved Heidelberg's record to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Marietta fell to 2-7, 0-4 in league play.

The Pioneers, who were without their leading scorer Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) due to an ankle sprain, trailed 41-31 at the half. They used a 25-8 run early in the second half to take a 55-49 lead with 14 minutes left. Eventually, Marietta cooled off, and Medaille used a steady attack to build their lead back up to a many as 14 to secure the victory.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — If Saturday (Nov. 17) afternoon's consolation game of the Days Inn Tip-off Tournament between Marietta College and Wesley (Del.) College had been a three-point contest, the Pioneers would have won 18-15. Unfortunately, the Wolverines got some help from inside the arc and were able to win the game, 101-87.
Marietta (0-2) connected on 18-of-39 (.469) three-point field goal attempts, finishing one shy of the school record, which was set four times during the 2004-05 season. The Pioneers finished the game 30-of-66 (.455) overall and added 9-of-11 (.818) from the free throw line. Wesley (1-1) went 32-of-65 (.492) from the floor, including 15-of-32 (.469) from long range, to go along with 22-of-30 (.733) from the line. GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Head Coach Jon VanderWal’s Marietta College men’s basketball team showed its youth Friday (Nov. 16) night in a 89-82 loss to host Gettysburg College in the first round of the Days Inn Tip-off Tournament.
The Pioneers (0-1) nearly overcame their early excitement, which allowed the Bullets (1-0) to build a 20-point first half lead. Unfortunately, Marietta ran out of time in its attempt to give VanderWal a win in his head-coaching debut.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's basketball team begins a new era in 2007-08, as first-year Head Coach Jon VanderWal, a 2001 graduate of Albion (Mich.) College, takes over the program's reins after spending the last four years as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan.
The Pioneers return four lettermen but just one starter, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) guard Isaiah Creasap, from the 2006-07 squad. The veterans were joined in camp by 15 newcomers, many of who will be asked to contribute immediately.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Former Albion (Mich.) College standout and Ohio Wesleyan University assistant coach Jon VanderWal has been named the new Marietta College men's basketball coach. The announcement came from Athletics Director Debbie Lazorik Wednesday (Apr. 18) afternoon.
VanderWal, the 15th coach since the program began in 1901-02, replaces Doug Foote, who resigned after 15 years at the helm of the Pioneers in February.
"I would like to thank Debbie and the entire Marietta College administration and staff for giving me the opportunity to become the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Marietta," said VanderWal.
