Bucheit joins Marietta College athletics staff June 5, 2008 "I want to thank Coach VanderWal, Larry Hiser and Marietta College for providing me with an excellent opportunity,” Bucheit said. “I am excited to get on the hardwood this fall and begin working with our players.” Marietta College gearing up for summer basketball camps June 2, 2008 The Shootout Camp is a day camp and high school teams play against each other. The cost is $210 per team. Creasap and Rockhold named All-OAC honorable mention in 2008 March 4, 2008 Rockhold had a breakout season in 2007-08. The center, who entered the year averaging 2.5 points and 2.8 rebounds over his career, was the only player in the OAC to average a double double this winter and led the league in rebounding. He finished with eight double doubles in 25 games. Rockhold finished the year averaging 13.4 points and 10.4 rebounds to go along with 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks. He ranked 21st in the country in rebounding. Rockhold scored a career-high 28 points in his final game for the Pioneers against Baldwin-Wallace and tied a school record with a career-high 23 rebounds against Waynesburg (Pa.) earlier in the season. No. 8 Capital tops Marietta men 82-50 Feb. 6, 2008 Marietta was led by Bradley Hinton (McDonald) with nine points off the bench. Blaine Carey (Akron/Barberton) also came off the bench and scored eight points for the Pioneers. Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Jay Chadwell (Georgetown) added 10 points and three assists in the loss. Wilmington also had three players in double figures and were led by Brandon Rogers with 15 points. R.J. Brown scored 14 points, while Nick Berter scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Marietta men prevail in overtime at Otterbein 96-95 Jan. 30, 2008 Freshman Jordan Cox (West Union) led six double-digit scorers for Marietta with 21 points, 15 of those points coming from behind the arc. Juniors Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) and Daun Lutes (New Matamoras/Frontier) both scored 16 points. Lutes also collected a game-high 10 rebounds. Matt Kubachka (Shade/Alexander) came off the bench to score 14 points. Marietta men fall at home to Ohio Northern 80-56 Jan. 26, 2008 Ohio Northern controlled the pace of the game early, as it built an early 10-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half. The Polar Bears did not let up and answered every Pioneer bucket with one of their own and led by 21, 45-24, at the half. The second half proved to be much of the same, as the Pioneers could not get the deficit below 20 points. Ohio Northern built its lead to as much as 27 and prevailed with the 80-56 win. No. 9 Capital too much for visiting Marietta; Pioneers fall 79-56 Jan. 23, 2008 Turnovers were the story of the game, as first place Capital (14-2, 9-0 OAC) turned 21 turnovers (14 in the first half) into 20 points. Marietta (5-11, 1-8 OAC) forced 12 turnovers but converted them into just five points. Marietta men's basketball takes part in "Dream to Read" program for 11th straight year Jan. 21, 2008 The Pioneers visited 400 students at Harmar Elementary, Phillips Elementary and Washington Elementary. The players, who split up into groups, were assigned a book to read to each class. They followed it up with a question and answer session where the kids asked questions about college and basketball. The players then signed autographs. Four Pioneers score double figures in Marietta's 86-82 victory at Baldwin-Wallace Jan. 19, 2008 Baldwin-Wallace jumped out to an early 14-5 lead just 3:25 into the action. The Yellow Jackets kept the lead throughout the first half, stretching it to as many as 12 before taking a 45-41 lead into intermission. Pioneer men fall to visiting Mount Union 81-65 Jan. 16, 2008 For the game, the Pioneers finished 23-of-62 (.371) from the field, 10-of-28 (.357) from behind the arc and 9-of-14 (.643) from the free throw line. Mount Union finished 29-of-65 (.446) from the field, 3-of-16 (.188) from three and 20-of-29 (.690) from the free throw line. Mount Union out rebounded Marietta 43-42 on the glass and held the edge in turnovers with 13 to Marietta’s 23. Pioneers struggle in tough loss at John Carroll Jan. 12, 2008 John Carroll's defense limited Marietta to just 13-of-45 (.289) from the field, including 7-of-21 (.33) from long range, and forced 25 turnovers. The Blue Streaks, meanwhile, went 29-of-77 (.377) from the floor, including 9-of-21 (.429) from deep. John Carroll dominated the boards, out rebounding Marietta 53-40. The Pioneer made just six shots from inside the three-point arc in the loss. Marietta men fall to Muskingum 86-73 Jan. 9, 2008 Marietta finished the night 27-of-58 (.466) from the floor, including 10-of-18 (.556) from long range, to go along with 9-of-12 (.750) from the line. The Pioneers turned the ball over 11 times. Muskingum went 32-of-63 (.508) from the field, 4-of-14 (.286) from deep and 18-of-26 (.692) from the line. The Muskies had six turnovers and out rebounded the Pioneers 38-30 in the win. Creasap named OAC Player of the Week Jan. 2, 2008 Creasap led the Pioneers to a 2-0 record at the 37th Annual Marietta Shrine Classic last week. Creasap set a tournament single-game record with eight three-pointers in their 95-85 win over Grove City and also tied a single-game record by hitting 10-of-10 from the free-throw line in their 98-85 win over Waynesburg. In two games, Creasap tallied 50 points and seven assists. For his efforts, he was named Tournament MVP. Marietta fell to 2-7, 0-4 in league play. Marietta, who trailed 46-24 at intermission, finished the day 25-of-66 (.379) from the field, including 6-of-15 (.400) from long range. The Pioneers, who turned the ball over 18 times, added 7-of-8 (.875) from the line. Shooting woes doom Pioneers; Marietta loses 72-41 to Wilmington Dec. 8, 2007 Marietta's inability to get shots to fall in the second period allowed Wilmington, who led 34-26 at the half, to pull away. Marietta men roll in rout of Penn State-DuBois 111-87 Nov. 25, 2007 Pioneer Men drop decision to Medaille (Pa.), 94-83, in Allegheny Tournament Nov. 24, 2007 The Pioneers, who were without their leading scorer Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) due to an ankle sprain, trailed 41-31 at the half. They used a 25-8 run early in the second half to take a 55-49 lead with 14 minutes left. Eventually, Marietta cooled off, and Medaille used a steady attack to build their lead back up to a many as 14 to secure the victory. Marietta men fall to Wesley in a shootout at Gettysburg Tournament Nov. 17, 2007 Marietta (0-2) connected on 18-of-39 (.469) three-point field goal attempts, finishing one shy of the school record, which was set four times during the 2004-05 season. The Pioneers finished the game 30-of-66 (.455) overall and added 9-of-11 (.818) from the free throw line. Pioneer men's basketball falls 89-82 to host Gettysburg in season opener Nov. 16, 2007 The Pioneers (0-1) nearly overcame their early excitement, which allowed the Bullets (1-0) to build a 20-point first half lead. Unfortunately, Marietta ran out of time in its attempt to give VanderWal a win in his head-coaching debut. 2007-08 Marietta College men's basketball preview Nov. 12, 2007 The Pioneers return four lettermen but just one starter, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) guard Isaiah Creasap, from the 2006-07 squad. The veterans were joined in camp by 15 newcomers, many of who will be asked to contribute immediately. Former Ohio Wesleyan assistant Jon VanderWal hired as new men's basketball coach at Marietta College Apr. 18 , 2007 VanderWal, the 15th coach since the program began in 1901-02, replaces Doug Foote, who resigned after 15 years at the helm of the Pioneers in February. "I would like to thank Debbie and the entire Marietta College administration and staff for giving me the opportunity to become the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Marietta," said VanderWal.
